Tree Data

Upload tree data to document and share the trees in your project. Each tree you record appears as a point on the map in Green Globe and can be linked to your Bumicert.

Tree data follows GBIF Darwin Core standards — a globally recognized format for biodiversity data. Once uploaded, your data is published on the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), one of the world's largest open-access biodiversity databases.

You are the data owner. GainForest is the publisher.

1

Collect Your Data

Collect your tree records using any form tool that can export a CSV or TSV file. We recommend KoboToolboxarrow-up-right with ODK Collectarrow-up-right — KoboToolbox is free and easy to use, and ODK Collect lets you fill in records on your phone in the field, even without internet. Once you are back online, sync your data to KoboToolbox and export it as a CSV or TSV.

To get started quickly, download our data collection template. It has all the required fields ready to use.

You may add extra fields to your form for your own scientific questions. Just make sure to remove those extra columns before uploading (only the required fields listed below are accepted).

Each tree record needs these fields:

Field
Description

scientificName

Scientific name of the tree species

vernacularName

Common or local name of the tree

eventDate

Date the tree was recorded

decimalLatitude

GPS latitude

decimalLongitude

GPS longitude

recordedBy

Name of the person who recorded the tree

locality

Name of the site or location

height

Height of the tree in meters

dbh

Diameter at breast height in centimeters

Once you have all your records, export your file as a CSV or TSV.

2

Map Your Columns

Upload your file. If your column names are different from the fields above, you will be asked to map them.

For example:

3

Check for Duplicates

After mapping, the platform will flag any duplicate records. If duplicates are found, go back to your file, remove them, and re-upload a clean version.

4

Preview and Upload

Review your records in the preview. When everything looks correct, upload your data. Your trees will appear on the map in Green Globe and as an evidence layer. Ypu can choose which evidence layer to link to a specific Bumicert.
